4Problems with Windows XP, great for everything elseMar 08, 2010
I purchased this KVM switch as part of an upgrade from PS2 to USB. I've been trying different things for a couple of weeks now but the main problem persists -- my WinXP system loses the keyboard and mouse when I switch to another computer. I can get them back by going through a bunch of steps to tell it to detect new plug-n-play hardware, but of course I have to plug in a second mouse to do that. I can't access that part of the OS if I'm in the middle of a game.

The problem computer is a Powerspec desktop I bought in 2001. It works fine if I boot a Linux live CD on the same hardware, and my other WinXP system (a new Dell laptop) works OK -- the devices disconnect when I switch away, but they reconnect when I switch back.

My guess is that when you change computers, the switch puts the USB ports into a state where they still draw power but do not respond to any signals. If they completely disconnected and reconnected, it would work fine (like unplugging and replugging). And if it provided a virtual device that the OS could talk to, it would work fine.

My other issue is that I think a good USB KVM should act as a hub so that it only takes one USB port on each computer. These cables take 2 USB ports on each. That was not clear from the picture and description.

I love the switching button on the wire. It's much more convenient than reaching back to the KVM itself.

update: I found out that the type of USB controller in my WinXP PC has a lot of problems. I bought a new USB 2.0 card for $8 and now the USB devices come back when they should. The only problem with that setup is the BIOS doesn't recognize the new controller, so I have to leave a second keyboard plugged in or it refuses to boot. I wasn't doing anything with the old PS/2 keyboard anyway...

5Better than expected, solid, easy to useMar 07, 2010
I needed somehting that would allow me to switch keyboard between three computers (not currently using the monitor feature). I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, use the USB wireless adapter plugged into the device and dongle easily switches the keyboard and mouse between three computers with less than 1 second delay MAXIMUM (after pressing the dongle button and move my hand back to keyboard - ready to use) was expecting it might take longer switching between computers. It switches in sequence 1 - 4 with lights on the device to tell you which computer should be active. I have lined up so number 1 is on left where number 1 light is, with middle showing number two and third to right... to make it less confusing I simply covered the last light with small piece of black electrical tape (matches the color very well with out making it look bad). This way if leave desk and come back I can see at a glance which computer is currently linked to keyboard and mouse. If working on number two computer and need to work on number one, you must click button 3 times to sequence (2,3,4 back to 1). Very simple... the only way could see making that easier is if they added a second button to move if different direction say 4,3,2,1 as option to 1,2,3,4 for my use, based on the excellent quality construction - SOLID well made with very good quality wires in line going to each computer.

I was surprised how small it is with an even smaller corded remote control. But it does the job just fine. I really like that the cables do not have connectors on the box side - less connections to make.

54 Port USB KVM Switch reviewDec 10, 2009
The IOGear is very easy to use and very effective at switching between machines. I prefer the small button that this switch has compared to using hot keys on your keyboard and it is capable of being constantly used between different machines.

I would recommend the IOGear 4 port USB for its effectiveness and ease of use.

5Does exactly what it was made to doDec 02, 2009
Pros: Good Cable length and solid construction. No issues at all. Overall probably one of the better 4 port KVM switchs available. The control switch, sized just right, small enough that it does not take up desk space, large enough to allow toggling at the touch of a finger.

Cons: None.

Considerations: This is a KVM, not a KVMA. No audio switching.
