Poor PoorJul 30, 2009 I have bought 2 of these items and none is in working condition. They just frooze and would not even light up. I think this product needs to be recalled.
Great deal for the moneyJul 14, 2009 I got this as an upgrade to my RCA Pearl, a 1gb player I got a few years ago before video was the thing, and I'm pretty impressed. The music plays loud and clear and the video doesn't lag or skip like I've seen on some of my friends' players. It's got some slight drawbacks, but you won't find another 4 gig video mp3 player for less than $80. It even has an FM Radio tuner if that's your thing, though I've yet to use it.
PROS:
- LOUD when hooked up to headphones
- Easy upload with WMP compatability
- Got mine for $60, an outstanding value when a 2 gig player with no video can cost as much
- Long battery life (haven't recharged it yet after nearly a month!)
- Picture library can display most image formats
- Holds about 1000 songs (More than my current collection)
CONS:
- Menues are a bit slow
- Turning it on can take some time, especially the first time after adding new files
- Not the player itself, but the RCA Dock program has to be upgraded the first time you use it
- Only plays SVM video files (RCA Dock can convert MP4 and WMA to SMV, though)
Still, it's a great player and an even better deal, so I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who doesn't have the money for an iPod or Zune. It comes with a neoprene protective sleeve, so it's protected from minor bumps and fingerprints. It comes with the RCA Dock program to upload your music, but I've found it easier to just use Windows Media Player, which has the added bonus of letting you edit the Album and Artist tags on the files before transferring them. So, aside from some minor problems you'll probably get from more expensive players, it's probably the best deal for your money.
Don't buy thisJun 29, 2009 This is the THIRD RCA MP3 player that has died on me. I stupidly keep replacing them or returning them. But they keep dying in after 8 months of light use. Do not buy this unless you want to purchase a new one every year. I thought the features would be nice, radio, etc. But this thing is a piece of junk. Do not buy an RCA MP3 player. They may be cheap, but they will not save you money in the long run.
These are a piece of JUNK!May 31, 2009 We bought 3 of these RCA MP3 players on black Friday from WalMart when they had them (the 8GB ones) on sale for $49. I gave the first to my oldest son (17 years old) for his birthday. He used it a few times and the screen stopped lighting up. We did all the suggested troubleshooting to no avail and had to mail it in to Audiovox for repair (WalMart would not take it back after more than 15 days). The second MP3 player worked for a total of 6 weeks when it went into the initializing mode and froze. We tried to update the firmware as RCA suggests as a fix for this extremely common problem with these. Well the MP3 player is not recopnized as even being connected to any computer we have tried. SO... that one is being mailed in for repair. We have just started using the 3rd one we bought but I am sure it will break like the other two and like the very many we see have broken for others. This is a little ridiculous! A product should last more than a few weeks. Once the warranty period is over, I guess we will be looking for new MP3 players as I am sure this will break again very soon!
Oh and whatever you do, do NOT lose your receipt. RCA will not do any warranty work without it and you will need warranty work I am sure!
minor exceptionsMay 10, 2009 I bought this product for my brother for his birthday. He is not really picky and computer savvy, so I needed something that was simplistic, and easy to transfer media. The RCA m4204-a is really for people who just want to listen to music and not pay too much money(like the iPod Nano!). It doesn't come equipped with a charger, except for a USB cable to charge it from your computer. However, you can use a cell phone wall charger, that has the mini USB cable as an alternative. The main issue I have is, there is no protective case or sleeve for this product. I've searched every where, and you'd think it would fit perfectly with the iPod Nano, but the RCA m4204 is a bit thicker, and the menu/power switch is separate from the iPod Nano unit, so any iPod Nano protector is incompatible.
All-n-all, my brother is pleased with it. Remember the cliche, you get what you pay for.
