4A Nice Basic GPS UnitNov 20, 2009
The Tomtom 140-S is a decent little GPS system that is easy to use, and gives good guidance in most siutations. I has it's limitations, but will do well if one doesn't get too far off the beaten path.

Strengths: The display, while smaller, is bright, clear, and crisp. The sound is crystal clear even to one such as me who has impaired hearing. In fact, I'd venture to say that there are few GPS units that have clearer sound. The larger than average speaker, and the voice synthesis circuits do an outstanding job of producing incredibly good sound quality. Navigation through the menus is easy and very understandable.

Weaknesses: the overall size of the display can present a problem to someone in need of trifocals. Erroneous map information can possibly be a problem in rural areas such as the one in which I live. In the town in which I live there is a road which runs east to west through the town, but is not continuous througout the town. If I follow the instructions while headed to the local Air Force Base, it will have me turn on a non-existent stretch of road that would put me squarely in the middle of wheat fields. Those are the only two disadvantages that I can list.

Summary: despite the relatively minor weaknesses, I would be confident to use the Tomtom 140-S to take a trip across the United States using most any highway of my choosing. Though I might be somewhat concerned about road information off the major highways and interstates, I believe it would get me where I want to go. It doesn't rate 5 stars, but it is a solid little GPS which I would not think a bad idea for a gift. The fact that I would be willing to give it as a gift is an indication that I think it is a worthwhile little GPS unit. If your GPS buying budget is limited, this one will do the job.

5100 % NOT ONE BAD THING TO SAY !!!!Nov 18, 2009
I bought this unit for my birthday in July after doing several hours of research on different ones online.I used it on a few road trips with my 9 year old son..took us right to where we were going.my husband then got a new job that requires him to drive to different stores all over GA and he took it,I have yet to get it back.We love it and wouldn't trade it for any of the fancier units with all the bells and whistles.Get the tomtom140s and you will be happy with it!!!

5tomtom 140s thumbs upNov 14, 2009
For the price of upgrading my existing Garmin gps (map), I picked up a tomtom140s with an up to date map.The 140s added a number of features not available on my Garmin.

2Not for me.Nov 09, 2009
Of the 10 times I've used this GPS, it has only worked about 3 times. It seems the farther the destination (IE: destinations 1 hour from my home), the wackier and more random the directions. I even had the map system updated with help from the TomTom tech support (who were very nice & very quick to answer the phone).

I typed in familiar destination points to test it. Of these commutes, it added approximately 10-15 minutes in distance/time, and mentioned streets that I have never heard of. For example, one set of directions stated to drive on Rt. 287 North, then to get off of Rt. 287 north to follow a series of surface streets, only to get BACK ON Rt. 287 North. Though I realize there's no perfect GPS system out there, I've opted to return the TomTom and explore other options.

1Dosent Meet The HypeOct 17, 2009
I really dont undertand all the hype around this Model.... The screen size is OK but gets substantially reduced by excessively large margin information/display..Hey Im buying this mostly for the Nav/Map display info not to see how fast im going in headlines..The small disply get reduced by another ~25%!

Map views are finnickey to navigate. I couldent imagine adjusting them while driving..Screen brightness is barely acceptable and it could handle glare better, the mount while robust, also has a propensity to fail with excessive adjustment... if you need to find locations befor hand and also have an idea of what is in the adjoining area...be prepared to struggle with the finneky map settings, fight overly large icons/boarders, and deal with poor resolution on a postage stamp sized diplay...

Compared to my Nuvi 200 its night and Day..The Nuvi has clear display and intuitive navigating in BOTH 3d and Map ...very simple to use under a bit of sress as one would encounter in going to a new area..

On the plus side, the voice prompts are exceptional and pleasant , and the 3D travel image is very nicely done a tad better that the Garmin ...also many nice features abound deep in the menues...the menu system like any works well once you get acclimated to it..The software set up is slick and the features are trendy too

I bought this as a smaller travel unit to take on plane travel....but the Map display is so poor and the learning curve a bit higher than the intuitive Nuvi ... I just dont see much benefit...Plus I have been using GPS systems for over 10 years so I understand many of the functional features

This is a decent unit and does very well if you just want to "plug and play" relying on the 3d View/Voice to get you to your detination ..which apparently most folks want....If you want to really "understand" your surroundings and become familiar with the area be prepared to stuggle with the poor low res Map display and its quirky settings...and forget about looking at the Map display while driving...

Overall I spent some time with this to make it a go... BUT in the end I am very dissapointed and its getting returned....
