1Short lived productFeb 22, 2009
This product now is probably not being produced any more, however what I write is probably true of any other JVC product. We purchased this system in 2006. The USB reader never worked properly, but it did not matter to us. The sound quality was not stellar, but it was perfectly adequate for us. However after a little bit more than 2 years it stopped working: the DVD player wasn't any power. After trying to get it fixed at Best Buy's Geek Squad (hint: avoid these people. They won't fix it if they hope to sell you a new one, and they sounded barely competent), we called JVC to ask if we could buy only the DVD player unit since the speaker system was working just fine. Their answer? Nope. Resoundingly no. You are supposed to throw away perfectly good speakers and just buy the whole system anew because (this is great) they have their own little 'patent-pending' cables, so it will be impossible for you to attach a non-JVC DVD player to the speaker system. They were extremely unhelpful when we asked about what could possibly be wrong with the player.
Needless to say, we refused to give up. My husband just decided to open the player, since we were going to throw it away anyway. He did not find anything visibly damaged, so he called again asking if they had a fuse to replace the one in the system. For the ridiculous sum of 7$, they sent us a fuse. Bingo! My admittedly technically inept husband had fixed the system. But we are so disgusted that we decided that we will NOT buy a JVC product again, and next time we buy any electronics system we will pay attention to the issue of replacing components with components of different brands. Please do the same and do not support companies that force you to either stick to their mediocre products or throw away perfectly good components.

UPDATE 9/2009: the fuse blew again. Apparently, this is a regular problem with JVC. This time we just went to Radioshack and bought a box of fuses so we'll be ready for next time. My advice stands: do not buy JVC products.

2Stopped working in less that a yearApr 01, 2008
My head unit just crashed for some unknown reason. No power at all. I even replaced the fuse which didn't work. And by the way the ceramic fuse used by JVC can't be found any where. I used a glass fuse. Guess I have to go buy some new system.

1I'd give it a zero if I could!!!!Jan 15, 2008
Garbage, junk, turning the receiver/dvd unit into expensive potholder for dining room table. Unit just completely pooped out after only 9 months. JVC wouldn't assist in repairing, but told me they had an authorized dealer that I could take it to around 100 miles from my home (**in another state no less!!!**). Took it to a local Radio Shack who, for a $20 fee, would send it off to have a repair company look at it. Estimate for repairs? $185.00!! No way. Will not ever buy JVC products again.

3doesn't perform well on all frontsSep 21, 2007
I bought this product about a year ago, and was initially very happy with it. Sound reproduction and volume are excellent and it is much too loud for my townhouse complex if I play it at half volume. It handles 5.1 inputs very well, and the range of options for surround sound output (music, stadium, movie etc.) is a nice touch. I don't use it for watching many dvds, but its playback has been adequate when I have tried; I can't speak to the skipping and position loss reported in other reviews. The buying point to me was the fact that it could play content off a USB flash drive. The fact that it can play XVID as well as DIVX (this is an incidental feature not listed in the manual) was a welcome bonus. My one main peeve is that it slows or even stops playback on content that needs high data transfer when using USB; so a panoramic shot of a carnival in a movie will slow playback right down to a standstill. Another irritating flaw is that it will not recognise mixed content on a USB drive. If you have mp3 and avi files on the same device it will only recognise the avi after the mp3s are deleted. Hopefully a firmware update will address these issues in the future.

I bought this for my house while deployed in Iraq so my girlfriend could use it. I come home and find out that it has a well known factory defect that simply shuts the machine off when you try to turn it on. The customer service agent told me that I have to pay to get it fixed because I cannot find the receipt. THEY SOLD ME A BROKEN UNIT AND REFUSE TO FIX IT!

Stay away from JVC.
