And while the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphics power and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compelling have been left out of this release.
Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, and Mario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casual gamers) entertained. Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150-cc engine, the game lets players race computerized opponents or up to four other players on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and nonlethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically-placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward, and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment. | | | Features: | |

N64 Mario KartFeb 04, 2010 While the SNES "Super Mario Kart" took the franchise off, "Mario Kart 64" made the experience mainstream its perfect analog controls, in-depth graphics, terrific sounds, and exciting gameplay.
Interestingly, most Mario Kart games seem to have either a boring 1st Player Mode and an interesting mulitplayer, or a boring multiplayer and an interesting 1st Player Mode. That is not the case with this N64 cartridge. While both modes have errors, both are a charm to play. This makes the experience leveled out equally, as opposed to eating a full cake with the cherries missing.
"Super Mario Kart" may had been a full cake, but its cherries were still missing. It had poor camera angles, weapon control issues, frustrating jumps, and the requirement of "coins" to speed up.
In "Mario Kart 64," say goodbye to all of those problems! The weapon controls are ripe, the jumps aren't as tedious, the camera controls are good, and those coins are a thing of the past.
The kart racing, even after all these years, is still pretty realistic. Have you noticed the speedometer that kept track of your speed? Or the configurement of Luigi's hat? Remember the effect of lightning upon your foes? Pretty awesome, and it all still holds up nicely.
Folks, if you are into an old racer for your 64 of the Big N, check this one out!
Love that Mario KART!!!Jan 31, 2010 My brother and I used to play Mario Kart for hours when we were younger. We just recently came across a N64 again and have started collecting our old favorite games. Mario Kart is awesome..

Mario kart 64Jun 24, 2009 This mario kart changed all mario karts in the future. This is the first mario kart that has mini games and computer generated graphics. I mean the 64 as u can tell the graphics have changed allot from the snes. This mario kart has many more features and great graphics. The sound is great also. If i had a choice of which mario kart to have for free if i did not have any of them it would be this one. I dont know why but for some reason this one is really fun. It has a great multiplayer, especially on mini games.
