Way ahead of it's time.May 29, 2009 The Gigabeat's slick design and beautiful display are what first attracted me to purchase this device. I have had it for two and a half years and it is still working like a charm. Granted I do not use it as much as my other audio devices. Sound playback is accurate except for a minor static sound right before each new song. Video playback on the gigabeat's screen is truly jaw dropping. Problems: battery life is non existent. After the first month the battery just would not stay for more than two hours. As for media for the device it is hard to find anything to buy, and conversion software is few and far between. The good thing about this device though is I can still use it as an external hard drive!

I loved it at first, then it broke my heart
Great player, for tech geeks who are comfortable with a screwdriverDec 21, 2008 I purchased this player off eBay a few days back (as it's no longer sold - Toshiba basically replaced it with the Zune). I will not review the original firmware, as I wiped it immediately and replaced it with Rockbox (www.rockbox.org). The Rockbox firmware is not complete yet, but it is functional.
I have used Rockbox with the Gigabeat F series, but this S series is a major improvement. The S series is small (smaller than an iPod Video), light, and has a nice screen and excellent controls.
As for hardware mods, it's very easy to open (5 screws). The hard drive is a standard 1.8 inch ZIF based 8mm size, and I added a 120GB drive to expand the storage. Removing he battery requires removing 2 more screws, but it can be done. Being 700mah, I suspect upgrading to a 1000mah will give me an improvement in battery life, but I haven't done that yet.
As for the sound - that's been the only drawback for me (updating this review, because of this). The sound quality is sub-par, to my ears. Comparing it with the Sansa Clip, Cowon D2 and the Zune 30, this player comes in dead last in SQ.
So, if you are a tech geek who uses Rockbox and wants a good player (sans the sound quality) that supports it, look no further!
