5The Best XM Radio To DateNov 23, 2009
I have been an XM subscriber for years. I was more than happy with the Delphi SkyFi and SkyFi2 radios I have owned in the past but the Pioneer XMp3 is a major step forward.

Why? Portability and recording. I picked up some headphones with built in antenna and mobile reception is awesome. Home and car kits also give outstanding function and reception. With the recording capability I will never have to buy music again.

The XMp3 is very user friendly and build quality is top notch. One sweet feature and unlike older XM radios, this unit shows the artist and song title when scanning channels. What a great feature and time saver.

4Pioneer GEX-XMP3: You can't go wrong!Nov 21, 2009
I purchased my XMP3 about 4 months ago and absoutely adore it! One small issue I have is I live in the country and going for walks and receiving the XM signal is a bit tricky. I usually have to shift the device on my belt depending on which direction I'm walking. I don't have a huge problem with this as my main reason for purchasing the XMP3 was for using it in my vehicle. I also use it while mowing with my lawn tractor; I usually listen to recorded music so receiving the sat. signal is not a problem. Another issue is that it will only allow you to delete music in the "All Songs" folder in the recorded XM folder in My Music. I imagine there is a reason for this i.e. if you deleted a recorded programming list you might accidently delete something you liked. This prevents it as it singles out songs by artist when deleting. Battery life is good overall. I've listened to live XM for about 3 hrs and was impressed considering how small the battery is.

The sound quality is outstanding. The vehicle I purchased the XMP3 is an older vehicle which didn't have aux jack so I had to go with a "sure-connect". I belive audiovox manufactures it. This device allows you to tap into the car's existing external antenna by simply clamping a small device to the base of your external radio antenna then plugging into the XMP3's car cradle. Once connected you have to manually instruct the XMP3 player to scan all FM frequencies to find a clear/open one then tune your existing car stereo to that frequency. My first thought utilizing a Sure-connect was that it probably would effect the sound quality i.e. scratchy etc. but boy was I wrong! I couldn't belive how crisp/clear the sound was and the bass was outstanding! (Hint: if sound quality is degraded, tune to one of the other frequencies listed or have the XMP3 rescan the FM band.)

One other thing I'd like to mention is that XM will allow you to purchase a lifetime subscription for portable radios. They don't usually mention it when you call for initial subscribtion, but be smart and ask. Once they realize you know about it they'll explain it. It is a hefty chunk to pay up front, around $435 by the time you add royalty fees etc, but if you plan on using and keeping your portable XM radio for years down the road, it's well worth it. XM will divide the cost up into 5 monthly installments so that takes some of the sting out if you're on a budget. The lifetime subscription is transferrable up to two times for a $75 fee if you ever decide to sell your radio. I initially purchased it for one vehicle but have since purchased a car kit for a 2nd vehicle that I was subscribing to XM on a month to month basis. No need to pay for that montly subscription anymore! I just place my portable in the cradle, turn on and within seconds I'm listening to supurb sound quality music, talk shows, sports, comedy, news etc. A bonus is that the XMP3's screen is in color and it displays the entire song title. Unlike my car's stereo which only displayed about 3/4 of a title if it was a long one.
Good luck and enjoy!

2third battery in 10 months!Oct 31, 2009
unit is reasonably good, except for battery life, my xmp3 is 10 months old and I'm on my 3rd battery, each one after 3 months will only give me 30 minutes of service, at 29.99plus shipping it a joke.....

2Love it.. until it breaksOct 26, 2009
This is an awesome device.. when it is working.

I loved mine.

Then it gave me the "powering up" or "please wait" signal of death.

This isn't uncommon.. check out the xm fan message boards to see more.

I used mine pretty heavily.. gym, office, car, home... probably 8-9 hours a day

My wife has a unit too.. .i can only wonder how long it will be before it dies.

Pioneer will replace the unit.. then XM will try to charge you fee to switch the subscription, so then you have to fight them to waive that.

I love XM, and I really want my XMP3 to work, but it is not a reliable product... a good product, but not reliable.

Update: Pioneer did send me a replacement unit.. but get this.. I bought my unit in April, I got my replacement unit 11/12/09. The warranty isn't going to be 1 year from 11/12/09 though.. it's still from April. So basically now i'm down to 6 mo. warranty with what I assume is a refurb.

If you are going to buy this product, this is one time I would HIGHLY suggest purchasing it from a place where you can get an extended warranty.. and i'd buy the most warranty I could possibly get on the product.

It's a great unit.. but reliability is TERRIBLE.

3It's OK but better off with iPhoneOct 22, 2009
I bought this device as a music player/radio for my 90 minute train commute to work. When the unit get reception it works fine. However, it must have a clear line of sight to the southern sky to pick up the satellite signal. Walking around town can cause problems if you turn the corner and you lose your signal. The other major complaint is that it takes almost a full minute for the unit to "boot-up" when you turn it on. Very frustrating when you want to use the device as an MP-3 player. The battery life is sketchy. Some days it lasts for more than 4 hours and other days it dies on my way home. It is a matter of routine to charge the unit every night.

On the plus side the ear buds are great. Good sound and they fit comfortably in my ears without any sign of fatigue. The display is bright and clear and it works well when I use it in my car with the car kit. It is a little disappointing that the unit does not play video given the size and resolution of the screen.

If you want XM programming on the go, I would take a look at the XM/Sirius download application for the iPhone. My son listens to XM using the app for the iPhone. His only complaint is when he is not in a 3G area for cell reception. If you are going to use the device in more than one location, then you should take a look at it. However, if you want a music player that has more versatility, look elsewhere.
